Child Care Programs

All child care programs in the SCDSB are operated by non-profit, established community child care operators. Child care programs located in schools are licensed by the Ministry of Education, Child-Care Quality Assurance and Licensing Unit, to ensure compliance with regulations under the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 and other applicable Acts governing the operation of licensed child-care.

There are two types of child care programs operating in SCDSB schools:

Child care centres operate in exclusive-use space within school facilities during the school day, under a lease agreement with the SCDSB. These high-quality early learning programs provide care for children from birth to school entry.

Before and after school programs (B&A) operate in schools where there is an identified need for the service by families, in shared spaces within school classrooms provided by third-party child care operators. These high-quality programs provide care for children in Kindergarten to Grade 6 before and/or after regular school day hours and in some locations, on Professional Activity (PA) days, Winter Break, March Break and summer holidays.

Demand and viability are two components that are considered when opening or expanding a before and after school program. School boards work in collaboration with the local municipalities/districts in their roles as consolidated municipal service managers (CMSM), and district social service administration boards (DSSAB) also consult with child care operators to determine demand and viability of expanding existing programs and/or offering a new before and after school program. This means that the numbers are viable for a third-party child care operator to provide a program and that there is a third-party child care operator able to provide a program.
